Council supports project excluding temporary workers accommodation

BYLONG COAL: KEPCO asked council to reconsider accommodation facility

Mid-Western Regional Council will continue to provide in principle support to the Bylong Coal Project with the exclusion of a temporary workers accommodation facility.

Korean mining company, KEPCO had asked council to reconsider its position and support a temporary workers accommodation facility on a reduced scale as it responds to submissions on its Environmental Impact Statement.

It said the facility would be downsized from housing 800 employees in the first six years to providing a maximum 350 beds to be reassessed after two years.

In a report to council’s Wednesday meeting, staff said  there is sufficient short term accommodation available across the region to cater for the construction workforce as it has done for similar projects.

“The potential economic benefits of the project will be significantly diminished based on the proposal to establish a workers accommodation facility as part of the Bylong Coal Project,” the report said.
